Don't take out all your money or carry all your money when walking around. 

Leave your passport in your room. Make sure to have one or more photocopies and carry them instead. 

Always have a backup and full charge battery pack 

Call your credit card prior to your travels and inform them of your pending travel plans 

Check in regularly with at least one person back home
